I loved learning. I always have.

The same relational geometry repeated across people separated by decades. The same family dynamics echoed through adult relationships. Experiences that had always felt unrelated suddenly fit together like pieces of a puzzle that had been sitting on the table all along.
The memories had not changed. Their organization had. For most of my life, I experienced events one by one. Now I could see their architecture. Patterns replaced puzzles. Understanding replaced explanation.
Recently I read about new migraine research suggesting that, between attacks, the migraine brain may exist in a less flexible state. The researchers describe reduced complexity in brain activity and speculate that migraine is a disorder of whole-brain dynamics rather than simply a headache disorder. Reading that stopped me. Not because it explained my life. Because it asked a question that sounded strangely familiar. What if the burden of migraine was never only pain? What if it also constrained the brain's ability to learn, retain knowledge, and integrate experience? I don't know. Neither do the researchers.
Sometimes I wonder whether I spent my life carrying two invisible constraints. The first was the childhood that shaped my developing nervous system. The second was migraine. One may have shaped how memories were formed. The other may have shaped how they were used.
This is a record. Scientists search for patterns across thousands of people. I lived inside one nervous system for decades. They measure brains. I remember living in mine. Perhaps one day neuroscience will explain the relationship between childhood, memory, migraine, learning, and the strange clarity that arrived after the migraines diminished. Perhaps it won't. That question belongs to science.
